Hygrophorus reai Maire Cap 1-3cm across, convex with a minutely scalloped margin; bright flame red on the disc becoming brilliant scarlet toward the edge, fading to deep chrome yellow overall in age; smooth, sticky, faintly translucently lined toward the edge. Gills bluntly adnate soon seceding, subdistant, broad, 2 layers; whitish becoming pale yellow. Stem 30-50 x 2-4mm, fragile, hollow; same color as cap; smooth, sticky, shining, often translucent. Flesh thin, brittle; same color as surface. Odor none. Taste very bitter. Spores ellipsoid, smooth, nonamyloid, 8.1-8.4 x 4.7-6.3µ. Deposit white. Habitat in groups under conifers. Found Europe and in New York, Michigan, and Washington. Season July-October. Edibility not known. |
